Some restaurants earn a place in your life not because they’re trendy, but because they’re simply, consistently good. Chungmu Jip in Euljiro is that kind of place for me. I’ve been coming here for as long as I can remember — back when I was still deep in office life, sneaking away at lunch with colleagues, not yet knowing it would become one of my all-time favorites.
I used to think it was an after-work drinking spot for the senior staff. Then I tried the galchi jorim (braised hairtail fish) and meongge bibimbap (sea squirt rice bowl) at lunch — and that was it.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Seoul
Tucked just 190 meters from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 2, Chungmu Jip isn’t the kind of place you stumble upon. It sits behind a big office building, invisible to passing foot traffic. But the people who know, know — and they keep coming back.

The restaurant moved from a basement space to a bright first-floor location at some point along the way. It’s clean, welcoming, and carries the warmth of a place that has been loved for a long time. Walls lined with celebrity signatures, old framed photos, and the kind of quiet dignity that only comes with years of doing things right.
When I visited on a recent Saturday afternoon with my mom, the room was full of older guests — groups of five or six, well-dressed, who had made their way into the city center specifically for this meal. That sight alone said everything.
What to Order

The lunch menu centers around seasonal seafood sets. The main options are galchi jorim (braised hairtail fish), dodarishuk guk (flounder and mugwort soup), and daegutang (cod soup) — each paired with meongge bibimbap (sea squirt rice bowl).
The combination I always come back to: galchi jorim (braised hairtail fish) + meongge bibimbap (sea squirt rice bowl), ₩18,000.
The meongge bibimbap arrives warm, dressed simply with fresh sea squirt and sesame oil. The ratio leans generously toward the sea squirt — which means the flavor lingers long after the bowl is empty.

The galchi jorim is slightly sweet and deeply savory, braised with thick cuts of radish that soak up every bit of the sauce. I’m not usually drawn to sweet flavors, but here it works completely. Paired with the clean house kimchi (fermented cabbage), the three elements find a balance that feels almost effortless.
I never leave a grain of rice behind.

Good to Know
There is no parking at the restaurant, but the SFC building or the nearby Starbucks building both have paid parking options close by. Food comes out quickly, so you won’t be sitting long either way.
After lunch, Cheonggyecheon Stream (a restored urban waterway running through central Seoul) is just a short walk away — perfect for a slow afternoon stroll. Lotte Department Store is right across the street if you want to extend the day.
For ₩18,000, fresh seasonal seafood in the middle of central Seoul — this is as good as value dining gets in this city.
Nearby cafés: Allegria at K-Square (parking available) and Pigments Euljiro are both within easy walking distance and worth stopping into after your meal.
